Rate structure & calculation

Effective 1 April 2026, Sassnitz charges a year-round visitor tax (Kurabgabe) throughout the city, with no high- or low-season distinction. The standard adult rate is EUR 3.00 per person per day/night for adults aged 15 and over. Children aged 7–14 pay EUR 1.50. The same daily rates apply to adult and child day visitors. Arrival and departure days together count as one day. Annual passes are EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children. VAT is included.

Exemptions & reductions

Exempt: residents whose main residence is in Sassnitz and their first-degree relatives staying free in the household; children under 6 accompanied by a person liable for the tax; persons with a severe disability of at least 50% upon presentation of official proof; business travelers, commercial representatives and other persons working in Sassnitz if they prove their work there and do not use public spa/recreation facilities; and participants in city-recognized conferences, congresses and training courses. Children aged 7–14 receive a 50% reduction. Eligibility must be demonstrated. Persons in an employment, apprenticeship or service relationship in Sassnitz, or carrying on a trade approved by the trade office there, are not considered non-resident for the taxable-person rules.

Short-term rental & host rules

The Kurabgabe applies regardless of whether the accommodation is a hotel, guesthouse, holiday apartment or house, private accommodation, caravan, motorhome, boat or tent. Every accommodation provider or authorized representative must collect the tax from the guest in advance on behalf of the city and remit it. Providers must electronically register arrivals and departures by the next working day, issue the guest card upon registration, submit the city's forms with the tax accounting, record guest and accommodation details, retain the forms until the end of the calendar year following arrival, provide them for inspection, display the Kurabgabe statute prominently in the accommodation, and are liable for guests' tax debts. Owners of private accommodation who rent it out must account for the tax themselves or appoint an agent. The reviewed municipal Kurabgabe statute does not state a registration-number requirement or a separate Wohnraumschutz/Zweckentfremdungsverbot permit for short-term rentals.
